How to Care for a New Tattoo:Do’s and Don’ts of Aftercare

Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but proper aftercare is what keeps it looking sharp and healthy. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the do’s and don’ts of tattoo aftercare—from cleaning and moisturizing to avoiding common mistakes—so your fresh ink heals beautifully and lasts for years to come.

1. Don’t Remove the Bandage Too Soon

(We know it’s tempting!) Never reapply a used bandage once it’s off. Always follow your artist’s advice on how long to keep it covered—generally, they’ll recommend two to four hours.

2. Wash Gently

Treat your tattoo like what it is—a healing wound. Wash it at least twice a day using lukewarm water and a mild, tattoo-friendly soap (such as Tattoo Goo Deep Cleansing Soap). Be gentle, don’t scrub, and always pat dry with a clean towel.

3. Avoid Water Submersion

No swimming, soaking, or long baths. For the first two weeks, avoid pools, hot tubs, the ocean, or jacuzzis. If it’s summer and your friends are heading to the beach, take a moment of silence for yourself and remember—you’ll enjoy it even more once your tattoo is healed. For future ink, maybe plan for spring instead!

4. Ditch the Tight Clothing

Time to bring out those loose, comfy clothes. For the first two weeks, avoid anything tight that rubs against your tattoo. Think of it like a scrape or burn—you wouldn’t want constant friction on it.

5. No Scratching

Your tattoo will likely itch and peel during healing. Resist the urge to scratch! Instead, use a soothing lotion with panthenol (like Tattoo Goo Lotion). It helps relieve itchiness, keeps your sanity intact, and protects your new ink.

6. Moisturize

Moisturizing is key to healthy healing and vibrant ink. Avoid petroleum jelly or oil-based products. Instead, opt for tattoo-specific lotions or salves (like Tattoo Goo) that contain natural components to support skin recovery.

7. Block Those UV Rays

Protect your tattoo from the sun to avoid frequent touch-ups. Once fully healed, apply sunscreen (SPF 30+ or higher) whenever it’s exposed. Using a tattoo-friendly lotion with sun protection will help your ink stay vibrant for years.
